Salon Music Through the Life of Franz Behr
A lecture-recital by Dr. Lin Lao
An inspiring Sunday of music and discovery at the Pacific Institute of Music! Dr. Lin Lao offered an insightful exploration of Franz Behr (1837–1898), a German composer of songs and salon pieces for the piano.
Behr composed over 600 opuses under his own name and also wrote under numerous pseudonyms, including Charles Godard, William Cooper, G. Bachmann, and Francesco d’Orso. These different identities offer a fascinating glimpse into his musical career, with possible explanations ranging from copyright considerations to attracting different audiences and reaching beyond his reputation for music for young piano students.
By exploring works published under Behr’s own name and his various pseudonyms, Dr. Lao helped us gain a deeper appreciation of his musical style and the composer behind the many names.
Thank you, Dr. Lao, for sharing your knowledge and artistry in such an engaging and inspiring class. A wonderful reminder that exploring the stories behind the music can enrich the way we listen, learn, and play! ✨
