David Thorp, MM

Violin / Viola

Originally from Florida, David Thorp is a member of the Auburn Symphony (since 1995) and the Stockton Symphony (since 2000). He attended the University of South Florida, Tampa while a member of the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony from age 17, then on to the Manhattan School of Music in New York City, studying with Lillian Fuchs (the first to have recorded, on the viola, the six Suites for violoncello from J. S. Bach) and graduating with a Master of Viola Music Performance in 1981. He performed in the American Philharmonic Orchestra of Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center, Conductor, Rohan Joseph, 1980-1981 and from 1969 to 1976, performed in the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony Orchestra, Conductor, Irwin Hoffmann, and in the Stockton Symphony, Orchestra, conductor Peter Jaffe, from 2000 to present day.

A high point for him was a performance of Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet Ballet Suite as viola soloist in Carnegie Hall under Rohan Joseph in the American Philharmonic Orchestra, 1980.

David currently lives in Auburn, CA married to pianist Qi-Qing Gao where his hair continues to grow.
